ELSIE is sat on the floor, leaning her head on the bed. Her eyes are closed. The bed has been stripped of all but the mattress. The camera is angled so the whole room can be seen, except for the door. There is nothing but the bed and ELSIE in the room. The curtains are closed. HARRIET enters, crossing the room to sit next to ELSIE. ELSIE does not move. Pause.

ELSIE: So what do we do now?

Pause.

HARRIET: We wait. What else is there?

Pause. ELSIE opens her eyes and sits up.

ELSIE: (defeated) Yeah, I guess. Nothing.

Pause. HARRIET sits forward as if she is going to speak, before leaning back onto the bed with a sigh.

HARRIET: How depressing. There’s got to be something?

Pause. ELSIE looks at HARRIET. They turn to face each other.

ELSIE: There’s me.

Pause. HARRIET opens her mouth to speak, then shuts it quickly. She looks down and away.

ELSIE: I’m sorry. I shouldn’t…

HARRIET: (cutting across her) No, it’s ok. You’re right, there’s only me and you left.

ELSIE looks down, embarrassed. She moves her gaze to meet HARRIET‘s. They both smirk awkwardly. HARRIET breaks the eye contact. HARRIET gets up and moves over to the window. She opens the curtain enough to put her head through. The camera does not see out of the window. She lets the curtain go and steps away from the curtain. She does not turn to face ELSIE.

HARRIET: So how long do you think we’ve got?

ELSIE: Not long. I’m surprised we’ve made it this far.

HARRIET: (sarcastic) God, your in a cheery mood today!

ELSIE: (bitter) Harry, unless you haven’t noticed, today is a day where I am perfectly entitled to be miserable. Normally I’d say “Well, it’s not the end of the world!”, but it bloody is.

HARRIET sighs and puts her head in her hands,  letting out a little sob.

ELSIE: Look, look, I’m sorry. I just wish…

HARRIET spins around to look at ELSIE.

HARRIET: (cutting across, snapping) You just wish what? That you didn’t have to spend your last minutes with me? That your bloody boyfriend was here to hold you through the pain? Give me a break. If you want I’ll just go die alone…

ELSIE: (visibly upset) You know there’s no-one I’d rather spend my dying moments with!

HARRIET: (embarrassed at outburst) I know, I know. I’m just stressed. (Pause.) That’s no excuse.

Pause. HARRIET sits back down facing ELSIE. Camera cuts to close view of ELSIE and HARRIET. All that can be seen is the girls and the side of the bed.

HARRIET: You’d really rather be with me than your boyfriend?

ELSIE smiles but looks away.

HARRIET: That was a horrible thing to ask. I, I didn’t mean to…

ELSIE turns quickly to face HARRIET.

ELSIE: (cutting across) Of course I’d rather be with you!

Pause. HARRIET looks slightly taken aback, but pleasantly so.

ELSIE: For God’s sake, I love you.

HARRIET smiles and leans forward to hug ELSIE. When she moves back, both are smiling.

HARRIET: Thank God. I thought you… Well that doesn’t matter anymore.

ELSIE: I just wish I’d told you sooner.

HARRIET: (soothing) There’s no better time than the present.

Pause.

ELSIE: There’s no other time than the present now.

Pause. ELSIE looks forlorn. The camera is in its original position again. HARRIET stands up and holds her hand out to ELSIE.

HARRIET: (practical) Well then, we ought to make the most of this time.

HARRIET helps ELSIE stand up. They both sit on the bed. HARRIET lifts ELSIE’s chin with her hand and looks into her eyes.

ELSIE: I’ve never loved someone as much as I love you.

HARRIET: I love you too. More than I ever thought I could. I always told myself I’d find a way into your arms if it was the last thing I ever did.

Pause. They both lie on the bed, HARRIET lying in ELSIE’s arms. The camera cuts to an overhead shot of ELSIE and HARRIET.

ELSIE: I can’t think of a better way to go out. With you.

Pause. HARRIET and ELSIE look away.

HARRIET: Else?

HARRIET and ELSIE look into each other’s eyes.

ELSIE: Mm?

HARRIET: Promise me something? That even when we die, we’ll be together?

ELSIE kisses HARRIET on the forehead.

ELSIE: Harry, I’d already promised myself that a long time ago.

Camera cuts to close-up overhead of ELSIE and HARRIET. They close their eyes as the camera fades to black.
This id for the From Scripts To Flicks contest.
It's my first ever contest, so I'm not expecting much, but fingers crossed! I'm quite happy with my script, so even if I don't go anywhere in the contest, at least I've written a pretty ok script! Comments and criticism as always encouraged! Thanks in advance. Peace. x

Nice job! The dialogue is tight, no wasted words (as far as I can tell), and just the right amount of tension to maintain interest without screwing the suspense up too high. I don't think I was terribly surprised by the revelation of the characters, but Harriet's anger and Elsie's shyness work really well together to make me warm to them both. I particularly like the assumed, though not explained, "end of the world" scenario the find themselves in - it provokes thought, but doesn't overshadow the interaction between the two, which is the true centre-piece of the script.

For what my opinion is worth, I like it!
